You want to get the best results from your photoshoot don’t you?

Here’s our top 5 tips to make sure we can make that happen!

Tip 1: TIME

Make sure we choose a time of day that doesn’t clash with sleep times or make you stressed to get here on time. Most often children are more predictable (and cleaner!) in the morning so consider this. Newborn babies of course sleep all the time and will be able to nap or play their way through their photoshoot. Doggos are generally happier and easier to work with after they’ve had a bit of run to let some of that excitement (and excess fluid) out! :)

Allow plenty of time to find a carpark and get settled here before the camera comes out. We’ll make sure you stay nice and relaxed once you’re here - we always block out more time that what we need and generally find that an hour and a half is plenty. Best not to squeeze a shoot in between other things too - we want to make sure you are all ‘present’ and not thinking about that next meeting.

Babies will sometimes sleep and sometimes play and sometimes poo.

Tip 2: PREPARE

Choosing the right clothing can be pretty important. Generally, we recommend steering clear of any busy patterns or printed logos that could act as a distraction. We want to make sure that faces and connection between people is the most prominent thing in your photographs - not Dad’s daggy Hawaiian shirt! Oh and prep this all well in advance and pack your bag the night before - no-one needs the stress of a rushed pack just before the shoot!

You might also like to bring other things to personalise your images. We’ve seen fairy wands and footies, balloons and books, pyjamas and piñatas! Feel free to surprise us on the day with whatever it is that makes you unique :)

Oh and snacks for little people and pooches is a good idea. Pushing through ‘hangriness’ is not fun!

Ladies, don’t feel the need to go over the top with make-up. Come how you are most comfortable and know that both with our skills with camera and computer - we’ll make sure you look great!

The smallest people need to the most stuff!

No need to bring the kitchen sink but it’s always good to be prepared!

Tip 3: THE MORE THE MERRIER!

Feel free to invite other special people to come along and join in the fun. When was the last time Nan was included in something like this? We can easily accomodate up to 25 family members in the studio for your shoot. Although logistically challenging trying to schedule everyone in, these extended family shoots are always something very special.

Also, ask yourself, “Is our family portrait complete without the pet?” If you said “no” then you best bring them along! We’ve welcomed every bread of dog in Tassie, plenty of cats, a few chooks and other birds, lizards, guinea pigs and even a lamb to be a part of their families photoshoots. They sure make for some unpredictable fun!

What do you think happened here?

no prizes for guessing but you’re probably right!.

Tip 4: COMMUNICATE!

Make sure everyone who’s coming knows what to expect. Especially the littlest people ;)  I’d encourage you to talk to any children about “how much fun they are going to have” and that they “get to take a few special toys to show Dean…” etc Allowing them to have some say into what they bring and wear can help them take ownership over their experience and get them excited about the photoshoot.

Grown ups and bigger kids just need to know that this is NEVER about “sit still, smile and look at the camera!” - not once, in over 10 years have we asked anyone to smile. This is sooooo much more about hanging out together and being yourselves, having a great time together is what ensures we capture plenty on natural expressions and authentic moments for you to cherish.
